P440 – San Jose Kitchen Remodel: Refacing, Quartz & LED Lighting

Blog

When I first walked into Jay and Annette’s kitchen in San Jose, CA, I could immediately see the potential. The layout was already practical. The appliances were in familiar, comfortable locations. The kitchen had good natural light from the windows, and the space connected nicely with the surrounding rooms.

But visually, the kitchen felt dated. The white tile countertops, older cabinet fronts, exposed grout lines, traditional knobs, and large fluorescent ceiling light box made the room feel older than it needed to be. My goal as the project designer was not to completely change the kitchen’s footprint. My goal was to help the homeowners make the right design decisions so the kitchen could feel cleaner, brighter, more modern, and easier to enjoy every day.

This project is a great example of what Adval Construction does best: we look at the existing space, listen to the customer’s goals, create a detailed scope of work, and then guide the project from design idea to real-life transformation.

The Before: A Functional Kitchen That Needed a Fresh Look

The before pictures tell the story clearly. The kitchen had white cabinets, white tile countertops, a tile backsplash, an older sink area, and a large fluorescent light panel in the ceiling. The space was usable, but the finishes made the kitchen feel heavy and outdated.

One of the biggest visual challenges was the countertop. Tile countertops can work, but over time, grout lines collect dirt, the surface can feel busy, and the kitchen can look older even when it is clean. The existing countertop wrapped around the sink, dishwasher, stove, and peninsula area, so updating this surface would immediately change the feel of the entire kitchen.

The second major issue was lighting. The old ceiling light box gave the room a dated look. It also made the ceiling feel lower and interrupted the clean lines of the kitchen. I knew that removing that old light box and replacing it with recessed LED lighting would make the room feel more open, more current, and much brighter.

The Design Direction: Clean, Bright, and Timeless

When I worked on the scope of work, I focused on creating a kitchen that would feel modern but not trendy in a way that could become outdated quickly. For Jay and Annette, the best direction was a clean, timeless palette.

We selected Mission White for the cabinet refacing. This was the right choice because it kept the kitchen bright while giving the cabinet fronts a much more finished and updated look. Instead of replacing the entire cabinet structure, we focused on refacing, which allowed us to preserve the existing layout while giving the kitchen a major visual upgrade.

For the cabinet door style, we used Decore-Bevel 112 DR1 doors, paired with new drawer fronts and updated black handles. This combination created a clean contrast: white cabinetry with dark hardware. The black pulls helped define the cabinets and drawers, giving the kitchen a sharper, more modern appearance.

The after pictures show how much of a difference this decision made. The cabinets now look intentional, fresh, and complete. The new door style adds depth without making the kitchen feel too busy.

Cabinet Refacing: A Smart Way to Transform the Kitchen

One of the most important parts of this project was the cabinet refacing. Instead of tearing out the entire kitchen, we improved what was already there.

The scope included new cabinet doors, new drawer fronts, soft-close hinges, soft-close glides, updated handles, and several cabinet adjustments to make the kitchen more functional and polished. These details matter. A kitchen remodel is not only about what people see in photos. It is also about how the kitchen feels when the homeowners open a drawer, close a cabinet, reach for daily items, or use the space every morning.

The soft-close hinges and glides added a smoother experience. The new handles made the cabinets easier to use and gave the space a modern finish. The cabinet refacing helped the kitchen feel brand new without requiring a full layout change.

We also addressed details such as the tilt-out tray and cabinet finishing. These smaller items help create a kitchen that feels complete, not halfway updated.

Quartz Countertops and Matching Backsplash

The original tile countertops were one of the clearest signs that the kitchen needed an update. For the new design, we replaced the tile with a clean quartz countertop and a matching 6-inch backsplash.

This was one of the biggest visual changes in the entire project. In the after photos, the new countertop creates a continuous, bright surface that reflects light and makes the kitchen feel larger. Without the old grout lines, the kitchen looks cleaner and more elegant.

The quartz also works beautifully with the Mission White cabinets. The result is a soft, bright, modern kitchen that feels fresh but still warm enough for everyday living.

The matching backsplash was also important. Instead of using a separate backsplash material that could compete with the cabinets or countertops, the 6-inch quartz backsplash created a simple and cohesive look. It gave the walls protection while keeping the design calm and clean.

Sink and Faucet Area: A More Modern Work Zone

The sink area also received an important upgrade. The scope included a new single stainless steel sink with a rack, along with plumbing disconnect and reconnect using new supply lines. The customer supplied the faucet, and the final look is much more current.

In the before photos, the sink area blended into the older tile countertop and did not stand out as a modern workspace. In the after photos, the stainless steel sink, modern faucet, quartz countertop, and clean cabinet fronts work together as one updated section of the kitchen.

This is one of my favorite parts of the project because it shows how small functional upgrades can change the daily experience of a kitchen. A new sink, a better faucet, and a cleaner countertop surface make cooking, cleaning, and everyday use feel easier.

Removing the Old Fluorescent Light Box

The ceiling was another major part of the transformation.

Before the remodel, the kitchen had a large fluorescent light box. This type of lighting was common in older kitchens, but today it often makes a space feel outdated. It can also create harsh lighting and visually lower the ceiling.

The scope included removing the old 4′ x 4′ light box, frame, and sheetrock, then preparing the ceiling area for painting. We also added four new LED recessed lights with a new dimmer switch.

This made a huge difference. The after photos show a much cleaner ceiling line. The recessed lights give the kitchen a brighter, more even look, and the dimmer switch gives the homeowners more control over the mood of the room.

This lighting update helped the entire kitchen feel more open. It also made the new cabinet doors, quartz countertops, and sink area look even better.

Project Execution: From Design Scope to Real Kitchen

After I created the scope and helped guide the design direction, the next step was execution. That is where Pedro and his crew brought the plan to life.

A good kitchen transformation depends on clear communication between the designer, project manager, and installation team. My responsibility was to help the customer define the right materials, colors, cabinet solutions, and scope details. Pedro’s responsibility as project manager was to coordinate the crew and make sure the work was executed properly in the home.

The project included demolition and disposal of the existing countertop materials, plumbing work, cabinet refacing, hardware installation, lighting changes, and countertop installation. Each step had to be coordinated so the final kitchen looked clean and finished.

The before and after pictures prove the result. The same kitchen layout now feels completely different. The room is brighter. The cabinets look modern. The countertop is smooth and elegant. The lighting feels updated. The space finally matches the potential that was always there.

The Final Result: A Bright Kitchen Refresh in San Jose

The finished kitchen is a beautiful example of a smart kitchen remodel in San Jose, CA. We did not need to change everything to create a dramatic transformation. By focusing on the right upgrades, we were able to modernize the space while keeping the kitchen practical and familiar for the homeowners.

The final result includes:

  • Mission White cabinet refacing
  • Decore-Bevel cabinet doors
  • New slab drawer fronts
  • New black cabinet handles and pulls
  • Soft-close hinges and glides
  • Quartz countertops
  • Matching 6-inch quartz backsplash
  • New stainless steel single-bowl sink with rack
  • Customer-supplied modern faucet
  • Plumbing disconnect and reconnect with new supply lines
  • Removal of the old tile countertop
  • Removal of the old fluorescent ceiling light box
  • Four new LED recessed lights
  • New dimmer switch
  • Clean, modern, brighter kitchen appearance

For homeowners who want a kitchen remodel without completely changing the layout, this project is a strong example of what is possible. Cabinet refacing, quartz countertops, updated lighting, and the right design choices can completely change how a kitchen looks and feels.

Why This San Jose Kitchen Remodel Works

What makes this project successful is balance. The kitchen now feels modern, but not cold. It feels brighter, but not plain. It feels updated, but still comfortable for everyday use.

As the designer, I always try to help customers make decisions that will still feel good years from now. In this project, Mission White cabinets, quartz countertops, black hardware, stainless steel sink, and recessed LED lighting created a timeless foundation.

This is the kind of transformation that adds value not only to the home, but also to the daily experience of living in it.

At Adval Construction, we believe a kitchen remodel should be more than a construction project. It should be a guided process where the customer feels supported from the first design conversation to the final walk-through.

For Jay and Annette’s kitchen in San Jose, that is exactly what we set out to do.
